ABB robots and Flex Framer installed in Great Wall Motors’s new Tianjin plant to manufacture domestic brand SUVs

ABB’s automated robotic solution helps improve welding quality and increase vehicle body impact resistance by 30%

Tianjin, September 22, 2011 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, recently provided a complete automated welding solution for Great Wall Motor Company’s new Tianjin plant inaugurated today. ABB robots, Flex Framer and robot roller hemming technology were deployed to manufacture the newly launched SUV HAVAL H6 and other mid- and high-end vehicles. The solution will help Great Wall Motor improve both production quality and efficiency.

The fastness of welding directly influences the anti-impact properties and overall safety performance of a car body. ABB designed and supplied a full range of automated solutions for the new plant’s main welding line. The entire welding line has 30 working stations and employs 27 IRB 6640 and IRB 7600 robots to process the over 4,000 welding points on the car body of the HAVAL H6 SUV. Thanks to ABB robots, the HAVAL H6’s shock resistance capability is 30% higher than that provided by common braze welding.

ABB IRB 6640 robots are used for welding the door cover and car body. With a payload of up to 235kg, it is suitable for spot welding and can carry the welding guns for consistent operation. Compared with traditional pneumatic guns, the robot adopts servo guns, acquiring less than 3 seconds per spot and 25% higher efficiency. ABB IRB 7600 robots are used in the flex framing station to weld the bodyside of the car with the roof and underbody to create the main frame. With a payload of up to 500kg, ABB IRB 7600 is suitable for many heavy material handling applications. It can hold heavy fixtures in position and weld the bodyside of the car. Flex Framing stations using ABB robots offer high accurate repeat positioning and can quickly switch production to a different car model.

The cooperation between ABB’s Robotics Business Unit and Great Wall Motor Company began in 2006. In addition to the Phase I of the new Tianjin plant, ABB will provide 12 robots for the gluing and welding application of the Phase II project, ensuring precise positioning and improved gluing quality.
