    Meet Jessie from China

Hi! I’m Jessie-LiTing Shao, I joined the GTP in October 2003 and started working as Financial Officer at ABB (China) Limited in Beijing after having completed the 18-month Global Trainee Program for Finance & Business Control. "The program was a very exciting time. We had a lot of challenges and ran into many unfamiliar issues, but now have the rewards of solid financial knowledge to build from," says Jessie who holds a Master in Finance from the University of Lancaster (UK).

Why did I choose the GTP over other graduate programs?
What distinguishes GTP from other graduate recruitment programs is that it is more like a "challenger program" than a supportive orientation for new professionals. From the very beginning - our orientation seminars in Zurich - we were encouraged to take initiatives in both organizing assignments and consulting/communicating with all parties involved.

My working experiences during the program

During the program, I had three different assignments in a number of positions in three different countries. From a job rotation position across departments at one of our joint venture companies here in China, to assisting a business area controller in the Headquarters in Zurich, to project-based financial analysis with ABB in the U.S., I was constantly challenged to learn both the fundamentals of finance and how to work within different cultures. I was not only exposured to a variety of ABB operations but also experienced different management styles.

    Personal benefits of the program

I particularly benefited a lot from the mentoring and tutoring parts of our program. Starting as fresh graduates, we encountered many complex situations. Both, our mentors and tutors have created a nice platform for on-job training and what’s even more important, guided us through the early professional stages of our career. The knowledge I acquired and working methods I learned from them are invaluable. Furthermore, across ABB, the people I met are impressive.

Looking back at the trainee times
Now looking back, it was really tough one and half years. We have gone deep into unfamiliar issues encountered in work every time and kept professional studies during spare time. But come along with all those tough times, are the reward of solid financial knowledge and more competence in working.
Today I stay in touched with my fellow trainees, mentor, tutors and team members and I am trying to make my contribution to this atmosphere as well. It is part of the great features of our corporate culture plus in such an every-changing world, probably continuous learning is crucial for all of us.
